気候変動などのグローバルな課題と私たちの暮らす社会、地域、そして私たち一人ひとりは関係しあっています。グローバルな課題の解決を難しくしている社会の構造が、日々の暮らしのなかで私たちが抱く思いや感情につながっています。その関係性をしっかりとつかむことができれば、地域で、もしくは個人の取り組みにも、大きな変化が生まれるのではないでしょうか。
今回ゲストにお迎えするテッド・メイヤーさんは、アジアの国ぐにから民族・宗教・出自の違いゆえに異なる経験を持つ若者たちをタイのバンコクに招き、グローバルな課題を英語で話合うことで、この関係性に気づけるようになる教育プログラムを始め、市民社会で活躍する次世代のリーダーを育てています。テッドさんのプログラムには、仏教をはじめとする宗教的な視点や持続可能な社会を目指すために世界が培ってきた知恵も取り込まれています。これは、まさにSDGs達成のためにも不可欠な視点と言えるでしょう。
このセミナーでは、テッドさんに、このような視点やその重要性をタイでの取り組みを通してお話いただきます。参加者のみなさん自身がグローバルな課題にどのように関わっているのか、関われるのか、ヒントが得られるのでは？ 国際協力に関心がある人、仕事として目指している人、必聴です。

【10/9】セミナー 「国際協力に携わるには～持続可能なメコン河流域を目指して」
セオドア・メイヤーさん（通称 テッド）
テッドさんはタイのバンコク在住の研究者で、社会活動家。International Network of Engaged Buddhists（社会に関わる仏教徒の国際ネットワーク、通称INEB）研究所に所属し、School of English for Social Engagement（社会に関わるための英語教育、通称：SENS）を立ち上げ、運営している。
SENSでは、気候変動などグローバルな課題に対して、アジアを中心に国境や宗教を越えて集まった若い世代の参加者が、知恵を駆使し、それぞれが置かれた立場に共感し合えるよう、英語の能力を高めながらリーダーとして成長できることを目指している。
テッドさんは、アメリカ合衆国の市民であるが、インド生まれで、人生の大半をアジアで過ごしている。人類学を専門とし、タイでは「エンゲイジド・ブッディズム」（社会に関わる仏教）に焦点をあてた研究をしながら、社会をよりよくするための教育に関心を寄せ、INEBで実践しているところだ。

We are all individually connected in communities and societies that must deal with various global issues such as climate change. The structure of social systems make resolving global issues difficult, so we need to integrate our thoughts and feelings as we live our daily lives. If we can firmly seize this opportunity, we can surely give rise to a great change through individual action at the local level together.
We welcome as our guest for this event, Ted Mayer, who is coming from Bangkok where he is working with young people from a wide variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds to teach them about such global issues through the medium of English language instruction in order to cultivate them as next generation civil society leaders. The program is called the School of English for Engaged Social Service (SENS) founded by the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB). The program offers an English language program for socially conscious language learning that allows for the rapid, enjoyable, and successful mastery of language skills in a rich, cooperative learning environment. It also fosters personal growth and social engagement as a contribution to peace, justice, understanding, and sustainability worldwide. Ted will not only be speaking about the experiences of this program but will also offer participants time to share and explore important global problems and how we can be empowered to take them on and transform them.
